The Journal of Prosthodontics has just released its third annual virtual issue. This is an online-only compilation of some of the Journal’s best work, focusing on a specific topic. This year’s topic is Prosthodontic Reviews. “Crestal Bone Loss Around Adjacent Dental Implants Restored with Splinted and Nonsplinted Fixed Restorations: A Systematic Literature Review” was one of 12 chosen to be included. 

The Journal’s Associate Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Radi Masri spearheaded the project and selected the articles. The virtual issue  will be available at least through the end of this year. That means that all articles are freely available to anyone.

Drs. Fawad Javed and Sergio Varela Kellesarian received the Award of Scholarly Excellence for their contributions to dental research in peer-reviewed publications during their two and a half years of training. Dr. Javed published 68 studies in medical and dental journals, and Dr. Varela Kellesarian published 41 studies. Each received national and international media attention for some of their work. This award was given for the first time to graduating AEGD residents.

Chronic periodontitis is a common inflammatory condition of infectious origin that affects the supporting periodontal tissues (including cementum, gingiva, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone) resulting in bone loss and, if left untreated, in tooth loss. In the year 2014, the global age-standardized prevalence of severe periodontitis between 1990 and 2010 was estimated at 11.2%.
